PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Mellon Foundation’s work is rooted in supporting the arts and humanities through grantmaking. For the Foundation’s website, seven illustrations were commissioned to visually represent each “Inside Mellon” topic.
Inspired by surrealist album covers from 1969—the year the Foundation was founded—the illustrations by Ibrahim Rayintakath apply visual metaphors: a key for Mission; a sundial for History; knitting needles for Grantmaking Areas; silhouettes for People; a coin for Financials; a horn for News; and a stage for Events. Certain design elements are also imbued across the collection such as material details—a consistent horizon line, and moments of weightlessness. Subtle complexities within the compositions mirror the nuanced nature of Mellon’s grantmaking and mission activities.
