PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The design of the exhibition galleries is inspired by San Francisco's varied palette of predominantly western, architectural styles and the ubiquitous presence of fog. Our design team worked closely with our curatorial and interpretation teams to select exemplary buildings throughout the city of San Francisco which reflect the style and/or time period of each of the sections in the exhibition. Several of these buildings have a direct relationship to the wearers and events where these dresses were worn. As a parallel to the exhibition's narrative, these buildings trace a partial history of fashioning the urban landscape of the city. Some of the buildings referenced are: The Palace of Fine Arts, Grace Cathedral, and the San Francisco Opera House. This manifests in the galleries through a single material: a diaphanous curtain that envelops the entirety of the gallery space. This curtain oscillates from a formless veil which contorts to acquire various architectural forms--fragments of the above-mentioned buildings.
