PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The exhibition graphic design of Faith Ringgold: American People is inspired by patterns and color found in Faith Ringgold’s work. With a career that spanned six decades, Faith Ringgold created art in response to the complexity of the American experience, touching upon the civil rights era, gender, racial identity, social justice, and equity.
The MCA Creative Studio designed bespoke wallpaper informed by Ringgold’s Windows of the Wedding series to create an immersive entry moment for the exhibition. On the facing wall, a super graphic of Ringgold’s name was typeset in the custom typeface MCA U. The dashed lines of the font reference quilting while the stark black wall provides the hard contrasts inspired by Ringgold’s work.
Arranged chronologically, the exhibition starts with Ringgold’s American People series and ends with her later work, including the Coming to Jones Road story quilt series. Each gallery is painted with rich saturated color inspired by Ringgold’s work to create a dynamic sense of pacing and immersion for the visitor to reflect on important and timeless work of Faith Ringgold.
