PROJECT DESCRIPTION
During the phased renovation of global engineering firm NI’s corporate headquarters, we developed a data-driven signage and environmental graphics program to provide intuitive orientation and a delightful workplace experience.
Surveys and charettes helped us tune in with NI’s workforce — engineers, programmers, and inventors who think in measurement and metrics, always analyzing data and seeking connections. Inspired by this left- and right-brained agility, we defined installations that appeal to both sides of the brain: a visualization of data or a creatively collaborative display, often both at once.
Content and data are delivered via NI’s brand vocabulary — a tidy palette of color, grids, geometric shapes and warm materials like felt, fiber, and wood. Glass film displays the decibel measurements of urban sounds while reminding library visitors to speak softly. The corporate mantra is revealed in a binary code made of felt stripes. LEGO mini-figures allow on-site and remote employees to represent themselves in an ever-evolving display.
The team continually seeks user input to define ongoing renovations. One employee’s comment is memorialized on our studio refrigerator: “I really love the techy/nerdy interactive art. It looks like beautiful decor, but I love finding the hidden meaning and messages. Lots of fun.”
