PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Patterns+Insights (P+I) is a publication that addresses the challenges of the 21st century across different disciplines, such as design, art, humanities, and technology. It sets the stage for its inaugural print issue, “Unbound,” which celebrates creative women who break societal constraints. Why woman again? The fact that the world has largely undermined women isn’t breaking news. We devised this issue as a kind of progress report on the matter.
Why a printed magazine now? When a deluge of digital content floods our devices, can an analog artifact slow us down enough to heighten our attention and spark critical thinking? By binding it with an elastic and printing it on three different paper stocks, we hope to draw attention to the book’s tactile qualities and engage the reader’s senses—and sense of play. The articles are presented in a way that flows across the stocks, inviting the reader to engage. The flexible typography system ensures readability and visual allure for diverse story genres. Typeset in GT Alpina and GT America, the magazine prioritizes flexibility, legibility, and contrast. The masthead of P+I reflects the theme of each issue; in "Unbound," for instance, the letterforms feature a swirling goddess symbol that symbolizes empowerment.
