PROJECT DESCRIPTION
High Desert Test Sites (HDTS) is an arts nonprofit founded by contemporary artist Andrea Zittel, headquartered at the artist's former home and studio in Joshua Tree, California. This comprehensive rebrand and digital overhaul repositions HDTS as it enters a new era, marking its transition into a fully-fledged arts institution.
The design of the logo and corresponding identity draws inspiration from Andrea Zittel's work while providing a platform for expanded creative pursuits at the site. The custom typography in the logotype references the grid logic underlying many of Zittel's works, while the slanted "D" recedes into the horizon, much like Zittel's stark black planar pavilions that dot the landscape.
The digital experience draws inspiration from the HDTS ethos, which seeks to integrate art into the desert environment. Across the page and throughout the site, content is interwoven with the landscape. Decay is a central component of desert life, and visually, it is the spaces in between, the spaces decomposed, that reveal the desert landscape beneath.
