PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Organized as a series of permeable alcoves, the redesign of this historic hall showcases more than 1,000 restored cultural treasures of ten Native Nations of the Pacific Northwest. The revitalized hall highlights the vitality and persistence of these communities, with new interpretation, storytelling, and dynamic media developed with Native scholars, artists, historians, filmmakers, and language experts.
The new design opens up the hall, emphasizing the interconnectedness of Northwest Coast communities, and provides multiple vantage points on the treasures. The background shades of blue-green evoke the cedar forests and dark water of the region; and large photographic murals provide a window into the natural environment. The interpretive design brings the living communities into focus, featuring current voices and people, while contextualizing the important historical work. Several alcoves are devoted to the work of contemporary Northwest Coast artists, demonstrating both continuity and reinvention in the art forms.

Juror Comments
“Really atypical and stunning. Unlike a lot of exhibition design it has a virtuosity and richness. Reading the whole room as a graphic, the lighting and color story brings the entire experience together. An exceptionally beautiful way to honor these artifacts.”
